Moving house is famously one of life’s most stressful events, but taking your Honest Plank bed to your new home doesn’t have to be!
When we design our beds, we build them to last a lifetime. That means eliminating the squeaks, wobbles, and weak points that plague mass-produced furniture. Because of this heavy-duty construction, taking one of our beds apart is actually remarkably simple - you just have to work in reverse!
Here is your complete guide to safely disassembling your bed for the big move.
The "Honest" Truth About Our Headboards and Footboards
Before you grab your tools, there is one crucial thing you need to know about how your bed was built.
To ensure ultimate strength and durability, our headboards and footboards come completely pre-assembled from our workshop. They are firmly glued and nailed together, meaning they cannot be taken apart - ever. Attempting to force these pieces apart will cause permanent damage to the wood. When moving, you will be transporting the headboard and footboard as solid, complete units!
Step-by-Step Disassembly Guide
Because the main ends of the bed are permanently fixed, breaking down your bed into its moving parts is quick and easy.
Step 1: Remove the Slats
Clear your mattress and bedding out of the way.
Locate the 40mm screws securing the slats to the bed frame.
Carefully unscrew all of these screws.
Once the screws are out, simply lift and remove the slats from between the side rails. Keep your slat spacers safe in a bag.
Step 2: Unbolt the Hardware
Look for the round Forstner holes facing toward the inside of the bed on the side rails.
Inside these holes, you will find a hex nut and a half-moon spacer attached to a threaded rod.
Using the spanner that originally came with your bed, carefully loosen and unscrew the hex nuts.
Once the nuts are off, slide the half-moon spacers off the threaded rods.
Step 3: Detach the Side Rails
With the hardware removed, gently pull the side rails away from the headboard legs and the footboard. You might need an extra pair of hands to keep the heavy headboard and footboard steady so they don't tip over!
Step 4: Remove the Rods and Dowels (Recommended for Transit)
To make sure your headboard and footboard sit completely flat in the moving van and don't scratch anything, you will want to remove the protruding hardware or cover it well with packaging.
Unscrew the four threaded rods from their receivers on the headboard and footboard.
Important Tip: Grab a clear, sealable sandwich bag and immediately put all your dowels, threaded rods, half-moon spacers, hex nuts, and screws inside. Tape this bag securely to one of your side rails so your hardware doesn't get lost in the chaos of moving day!
By following these simple steps, your Honest Plank bed will arrive at your new bedroom ready to be quickly reassembled - and ready to provide decades more of perfectly sturdy, squeak-free sleep. Happy moving!
