Slats, Gaps, and Support: What’s the Best Base for Your Mattress?

When designing the perfect bedroom, it is easy to get caught up in the aesthetics—the beautifully grained wood, the cozy linens, and the perfect lighting. We also spend a lot of time (and money!) selecting the perfect mattress. But there is a hidden hero beneath the sheets that rarely gets the spotlight: the bed base itself.
Recently, a customer reached out to us while designing her custom Super King bed. They were planning to use a very heavy foam mattress and wanted to know exactly how our beds were built beneath the surface to support it. It was a brilliant question, and it inspired us to pull back the curtain on the engineering of The Honest Plank beds.
Because a bed shouldn't just look beautiful; it needs to be structurally sound enough to protect your mattress investment for a lifetime. Here is why what is underneath matters just as much as what is on top.
The Sweet Spot: Why We Use a 7.5cm Slat Gap
If you look at the slats on our beds, you will notice they are spaced with intention. We design our frames with an ideal gap of approximately 7.5cm between each solid wood slat. But why this specific measurement?
Preventing Sag: Heavy mattresses—especially dense memory foam or latex—need solid, continuous support. If slat gaps are too wide, the foam will slowly start to push through the spaces over time, leading to premature sagging and a ruined mattress.
Essential Airflow: So, why not just use a solid sheet of wood? Breathability. We all sweat during the night, and a mattress needs airflow underneath to allow moisture to evaporate. Without proper ventilation, you run the risk of mould and mildew building up inside your mattress. The 7.5cm gap offers the perfect balance: tight enough for rigid support, but open enough to let the mattress breathe freely.
Flat Slats vs. Sprung Slats
Many mass-produced beds use curved, flexible "sprung" slats. While these are cheap to produce, they often bow under heavy weight, creating an uneven sleeping surface that forces your mattress to warp and dip.
At The Honest Plank, we use thick, flat, solid wood slats. They provide a perfectly level foundation that allows your mattress to do the job it was designed to do, distributing your weight evenly without bowing, snapping, or squeaking.
The Backbone: Heavy-Duty Central Support
When you move into larger bed sizes like a Super King, the span of the wood becomes significantly wider. Naturally, the wider the span, the more potential there is for dipping in the middle—especially when supporting two adults, heavy bedding, and perhaps a family dog!
To combat this, all of our larger frames are engineered with a heavy-duty central supporting ridge.
The Structural "Spine": Think of this central ridge as the backbone of the bed. It runs straight down the middle, directly under the slats, giving the centre of the bed the exact same rock-solid support as the outer edges. It completely eliminates that dreaded "roll-together" feeling you get on weaker frames, ensuring your mattress stays perfectly level for decades.
Built for Life, Inside and Out
When you invest in a solid wood bed, you are investing in the whole system. We believe in natural materials and honest craftsmanship, which means never cutting corners where you can't see them.
Whether you are sleeping on a traditional pocket-sprung mattress or a heavy modern foam setup, your bed frame should be doing the heavy lifting—so you can focus entirely on getting a good night's rest.
