Raw Timber to Restful Nights: The Journey of Your Honest Plank Bed

In a world of "one-click" delivery and mass-produced furniture, it’s easy to forget that a bed doesn't just pop into existence in a box. Behind every piece that leaves The Honest Plank is a journey—one that involves a lot of sawdust, a fair bit of elbow grease, and a real passion for British craftsmanship.

We thought we’d take you behind the workshop doors to see exactly how your bed goes from a stack of raw timber to the centrepiece of your bedroom.

1. It Starts with the Timber

Every bed begins its life as ethically sourced timber from our trusted UK suppliers. When the wood arrives at our workshop, it’s raw, heavy, and full of character. We don't use "perfect" clinical wood; we love the knots and grains that make every single plank unique.

2. The Cutting & The Craft

Once your order pops up on our system, the real work begins. We don't have "stock" sitting on shelves—we build for you.

We carefully measure and cut the timber into the specific pieces needed for your frame. This is followed by precision drilling and—the part our shoulders feel the most—sanding. We sand every inch by hand to ensure that while the wood looks rustic, it feels like silk to the touch.

3. The Transformation: Sustainable Staining

This is where the magic happens. The sanded "blank" moves over to our staining and painting department. Whether you’ve chosen the light, airy tones of Honey Oak or the deep, rich hues of Barrel Aged, this is where the wood’s personality truly comes out.

We use a variety of stains, but we have one non-negotiable rule: they must be sustainable. We believe a bed shouldn't just look good; it should be kind to the planet you’re sleeping on.

4. Assembly & The Final Quality Check

Once the stain is perfectly dry, we move to the assembly stage. We assemble the headboard and footboard right here in the workshop. This isn't just to save you time during setup; it’s our chance to make sure every joint is flush and every plank is solid. If it’s not perfect, it doesn’t move to the next stage.

5. The "Home Straight": Packaging & Delivery

Finally, your bed is tucked into its protective packaging. We include a bespoke assembly kit and clear, "no-headache" instructions because we know the last thing you want after a long day is a confusing DIY project.

Then, we hand it over to our dedicated carriers, and it begins its final journey to your front door.

Why do we do it this way?

Because we believe that when you spend a third of your life in bed, that bed should have a story. It should be built by people who care about the grain of the wood and the strength of the rail.

When you buy from The Honest Plank, you aren't just buying a piece of furniture—you’re bringing a little piece of our workshop into your home.
