The Honest Guide: How to Care for Your Solid Wood Furniture

At The Honest Plank, we believe furniture should tell a story. Unlike mass-produced, flatpack items designed for the short term, solid wood is a living, breathing material. It responds to your home, the changing seasons, and the years of use it sees.
When you invest in a piece handmade by master craftsmen in the UK, you are investing in a legacy. Caring for your bespoke bed frame or furniture isn't difficult or time-consuming - it is simply about understanding the timber. Here is our honest guide to ensuring your wooden furniture ages beautifully.
1. Understand the Environment
Wood is naturally hygroscopic, meaning it continuously absorbs and releases moisture depending on its environment.
Watch the Heat: Position your bed frame or furniture away from direct heat sources like radiators or active fireplaces. Extreme, localised heat can cause the timber to dry out too quickly, leading to shrinkage or hairline cracks.
Mind the Sunlight: A natural wash of sunlight brings out the warmth in the grain, but prolonged, direct UV light can alter the colour of the wood over time. If a piece sits in a very sunny spot, try to ensure the light hits it evenly.
2. A Simple Cleaning Routine
When it comes to solid wood, less is almost always more. Put down the supermarket aerosol sprays; they often contain silicones that build up a cloudy, sticky film over time and choke the natural finish.
Daily/Weekly Dusting: Use a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth. Always wipe with the direction of the grain, never against it, to gently lift dust out of the natural grooves.
Dealing with Spills: If there is a mark or a spill, tackle it with a slightly damp cloth and a single drop of mild dish soap. Wipe the area clean, and then immediately dry it with a separate soft towel. Never leave standing water on solid wood.
3. Nourishing the Grain
Because our furniture is masterfully crafted using sustainable processes, we finish our pieces with natural oils or waxes that celebrate the raw material rather than hiding it under thick varnishes. If you want to go the extra mile to maintain your wood furniture, you can top up it's oil coating.
When to Oil: We recommend re-oiling your furniture every 6 to 12 months, or whenever the timber starts to look a bit "thirsty" or dull.
How to Apply: Take a clean, lint-free cloth and apply a very thin coat of a high-quality natural finish (like Danish Oil or beeswax). Let it sit and absorb for about 10 to 15 minutes, then firmly buff away any excess with a clean cloth.
The Result: This simple ritual doesn't just protect the surface from moisture; it brings the rich, honest depth of the grain right back to life.
4. Embracing Character Marks
A pristine, untouched piece of furniture belongs in a museum, not a home. As you live with your bed frame, it will pick up small signs of life.
Scratches: Minor surface scratches can usually be blended away by buffing a small amount of furniture wax into the area.
Dents: Because we use real, solid timber, the wood is forgiving. Minor dents can often be lessened, but we recommend embracing these as part of the story. They are the hallmarks of a piece that is truly lived in and loved.
